Classroom Management Plan Math Skills 2011-2012 Ms. Baumgartner
Math skills will focus on the five major strands as outlined by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks: Number Sense and Operations, Patterns, Relationships and Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability. Furthermore, the class will be asked to problem solve, take risks, share ideas, and “think outside the box”. Many activities may seem odd at first, and many will have immediate practical applications. It is my goal to foster an interest, not a fear in mathematics.
Tardiness All students are expected to be in class when the bell rings. Students that are late will check in with me briefly at the end of the day in room 3120. Failure to report will result in two detention hours. Subsequent violations will result with additional time in detention or with me after school.
Attendance In the event that a student needs to be absent from class the make-up policy from the WHS Student-Parent Handbook will be followed. The guideline is two school days to make up work for each day absent. Upon returning from school, the student must see me, and I will then inform the student of any homework due, missed notes, upcoming quizzes, etc.... A student’s failure to see a teacher, as required by policy, does not excuse him/her from any tests or assignments. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY! Failure to make up the work will result in a zero.
Academic/ Behavioral Expectations
1. Students will complete all work to the best of their ability. They are encouraged to take risks, participate, and encourage each other. Students will occasionally be expected to work in cooperative learning groups. The expectation is that they will be respectful to one another and to me. 2. Quizzes and tests will be announced ahead of time, and students will receive a review of the material. 3. Parents and students are encouraged to check their grades online, and to contact me if there are any questions or concerns. 508-660-7257 x 206 or kbaumgartner@walpole.k12.ma.us 4. Students may (and are encouraged to) arrange for help after school. 5. Any cheating will result in a zero for that quiz, test or assignment. 6. Students are required to bring a calculator, math notebook (or three ring binder with designated math section), separate math folder and pencils to class each day. Failure to do so will result affects his/her PACE grade.
Bathroom Policy At the beginning of each term, students will be issued four bathroom passes that may be used that quarter. Students may use them when they wish, but they will not be issued extras until the next term starts. It is the student loses the passes, they lose the privilege.
Grading System
PACE Grade 10% Twice a quarter, students will meet with me to discuss the following criteria and arrive at a grade. Each category is rated on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being “outstanding”, and 1 being “nowhere to go but up.”
(P)reparedness – I came to class prepared. I had my book/papers, math notebook, math folder, homework calculator, and a pencil. I was seated when the bell rang, and had my homework out without being told. I was organized, and didn’t spend wasted time looking for materials.
(A)ttitude – I stayed positive and open minded. I tried my best, didn’t give up, and refrained from complaining if something wasn’t going my way. If I became frustrated with an assignment, another student, teacher, myself, or you, I expressed my displeasure in an appropriate manner.
(C)ooperation – When asked to work with others, I helped and shared ideas, and I was open to listening to other’s thoughts and ideas without being critical. I was a team player, I didn’t kick back and let others do the work, nor did I take over. I was on task and not doing other work or socializing too much. I responded well to redirection, and did not disrupt the learning process of others.
(E)ffort –I came to class ready to learn. I was focused on the task at hand, and completed class work. I volunteered my answers I took notes when expected, wrote assignments down, and asked for help if I needed it. I tried my best, took risks, worked diligently, and stayed organized.
Homework 10% At the beginning of each class, students should have homework on their desk ready to be checked. I will check and periodically collect homework. Homework is expected to be neat and complete. It is to be dated and labeled with the appropriate text page if applicable. Homework that is messy or incomplete will receive half or no credit accordingly. If students miss homework assignments twice in a row, they may be asked to stay after to make up the assignment.
Classwork 10% Some assignments done in class will be collected and graded. At times these will be individual assignments, and at other times may be group work.
Quiz Grades 25 % All quizzes will be announced ahead of time, and students will have review of the material
Test Grades/Project 35% All tests will be announced ahead of time, and students will have review of the material
Daily Problems and MCAS Prep 10% At the beginning of each class period, as well as an occasional homework assignment, students will work on 5 math problems, MCAS problems or one longer problem. Students who work diligently, volunteer answers, demonstrate the use of strategies, and fix mistakes will earn full credit each day.
